The Botox treatment involves injecting Botox into the sweat glands underneath the skin. This procedure works really well, but it's not permanent and can be quite expensive.

There are a few oral medications that can be prescribed for someone who has excessive sweating. One of them is Robinul, which is usually used to treat ulcers but is effective in treating severe sweating too. There are some side effects however, such as headaches, dizziness and nausea.

A surgical procedure, called Thoracis Sympathectomy, involves making small incisions in the chest and cutting the nerve that runs to the sweat glands in the armpits. Frankly, this one sounds dangerous and I would only recommend it in really extreme cases.

Iontophoresis is very promising. The patient puts their hands or feet in a basin of water while a light electrical charge passes through it. This somehow numbs the sweat glands for a time, reducing sweating. Unfortunately my sweating problem was confined to my underarms, so this treatment wasn't an option.

I wasn't really interested in Botox or surgery, so I tried the medication for a while. It worked ok, but the side effects made me quit the meds after about 2 weeks.

That's when I learned about natural at home remedies for stopping armpit sweating. The most effective remedies I read about were:

-Aluminum based antiperspirants-baking soda-changing diet-wearing cotton clothes

Some antiperspirants work better than others. Aluminum based antiperspirants seem to work the best at eliminating major underarm sweating.

Baking soda is another easy trick that you might want to try out. Baking soda is great at absorbing moisture and odors. Just take about a teaspoon of baking soda and rub it on your pits!

A good diet is important for good health and I had some success simply eating better. I also avoided spicy foods, which can trick the brain into thinking the body is hotter than it really is. There is some evidence that iodine rich foods like fish and eggs can cause excessive sweating, but I didn't notice any difference avoiding these foods. Wearing cotton clothes can help keep you cool and dry by keeping air flow at a maximum.

You will have to decide what methods work best for you. Personally, I avoided the medical treatments because of the cost and side effects. When I decided to figure out how to stop my armpit sweating, I found the natural methods much more effective, but your mileage may vary. Good luck!

10. Eat more often. Sounds ridiculous I know. You are trying to eat less not more. However, replacing the 3 meals per day that you most likely eat at present with 5 or 6 smaller, and healthier, meals will help a lot. It will boost your metabolism which will have to continually process the food and faster metabolism means that you will be burning body fat more easily; even while resting.

6. Cut out trans fats. These are unsaturated fats and will raise your levels of bad LDL cholesterol and lower levels of good HDL cholesterol. Trans fats may read as hydrogenated vegetable oil on the label and it is found in such things as cakes and biscuits, shortbread, doughnuts and French fries.

5. Focus on food. Be aware of what you are eating. If you sit in front of the TV, filling your face while you watch your favourite soap then you will be unaware of what you are eating and in what quantity. This means you will be likely to eat beyond your full point. Sit at a table and take notice of your food. Make a point of eating slowly, chew your food well. Put your cutlery down while you chew, empty your mouth, perhaps have a sip of water and then take up your cutlery and resume eating.

4. Do not eat too much. Eating slowly and being aware of your food will help you to stop overeating. There is a cut off point when your brain sends a message that you are full and to stop eating. However, it takes about 20 minutes for this message to reach our awareness. If you wolf down your food you will be way past this full point before you even get the message. Stop eating when you are about 70% full and you will find a short time later that you are completely satisfied. Going beyond this point will tend to leave you feeling bloated.

3. Drink lots of water. This is absolutely essential for life and is invaluable for any weight loss campaign. Eight, 8oz glasses per day are recommended but more will do you no harm. You cannot drink too much. A glass before meals can help reduce your hunger and prevent eating too much and a glass when hungry can stave off the feeling of hunger for a short time, enough to take your mind off your hunger and perhaps prevent you from eating something you shouldnt.

2. Exercise is the key. You will not get there by diet alone. The body is made to move around, that is what it does. Your body does not want to lie idle for long periods of time. Switch off the TV, get up off the couch and get out there. Begin with walking if you are very overweight and increase it every day. Heart pumping exercise and sweat is what you want to aim for. You will soon come to love exercise.

1. Believe in yourself. You can do this! This fat person that you see in the mirror does not have to be the image that you see forever. This is the image that life and circumstances up to now, have created. You can alter this image! You can change your body image and your shape along with your eating habits. You can change your life! Many men and women ask the question: How do I lose more weight? Often they are seeking a panacea, a pill or a special diet. They want the holy grail to a fabulous body. But like Cher said so many years ago in the Scandinavian Health Spa commercial: "If it came in a bottle, everyone would have one."

Other times people, especially women, have started losing weight and hit a plateau. They just cannot seem to lose more weight no matter what they do. Still others made a lifestyle change they were unaware of but noticed they started losing weight and now want to lose more. So, in answer to the question, "How do I lose more weight?", the response is, "It depends."

The most important factor in losing more weight is lifestyle. Lifestyle includes diet, exercise, and stress. Continue making lifestyle changes gradually. Drastic actions are too hard to maintain. Why? It generally takes 30 days of continuous action to make something a habit. Whenever your weight loss slows down or stops, make another change. For example, week 1 begin walking (to work, at lunch, in the evening) 20-30 minutes per day. Week 3-4 cut out all sodas, heavily concentrated fruit juices, and other sugary drinks. Drink water and unsweetened teas instead. Week 6-7 begin eating 5-8 fruit and vegetable servings per day, uncooked or lightly steamed when possible. (Juices do not count unless they are fruit that you juiced in a juicer or blended in a blender). Eat additional fruits and vegetables in lieu of rice, pasta or bread at mealtime and substitute carrot sticks or an apple with peanut butter for the chips you would normally grab as a snack when you get hungry.

If you are further along than the above example assumes, to lose more weight increase your workout/exercise intensity, increase your snacking on whole fruits and vegetables, and make sure you are eating the right amount of calories (not too much, not too little) to support your target weight. If you are eating too little, your body will conserve calories to protect itself and you will find it continue to find it difficult to lose weight. In addition, pay attention to what you are eating. Often, people do the following without realizing the consequences: eat hard candies all day at work, grab a little muffin in the break room, sip a soda while watching a ball game in the evening. That could easily add up to 700 additional calories. (8 pieces of hard candy at 20 calories each = 160 calories, a commercial muffin = 300 calories, a 12-oz soda = 240 calories). That mindless snacking may be what is stopping you from losing more weight.

If the latter is not your nemesis, it may be your workout. I often see many people who bike and jog a lot yet have significant basketball bellies. They do the same workout all the time so their bodies have become highly efficient at performing those tasks. Hence, they burn few calories. Increase the intensity of your workout. Do intervals. If you always use the elliptical trainer, get off! Run outside or on the treadmill. Use the rowing machine. Participate in a boot camp. Do P90X or a similar program. Take up kickboxing or another martial art. Mix it up and sweat more. Variety and intensity will get you back on the weight loss continuum.

Finally, refrain from eating late, unless you also work out late. Match your food consumption with your energy usage. Your body will thank you for it. You will lose more weight and have more energy.

Hyperhidrosis is a very common problem, perhaps explaining the amount of TV adverts dedicated to antiperspirants and deodorants. For some, however, it is more than just a passing thought after showering each morning. It can take over people lives. This degree of excess sweating, where it becomes a medical problem, is called hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis can either be generalized or localized to specific parts of the body. The usual sites are hands, feet, armpits and groin area. A sweaty upper lip have been a specific concern of several patients I have seen with hyperhidrosis.

Primary hyperhidrosis is found to start during adolescence or even before, and interestingly, seems to be strongly genetic - ie inherited.

Primary hyperhidrosis must be distinguished from secondary hyperhidrosis, which can start at any point in life. It is not known what causes primary hyperhidrosis but, If starting later in life, hyperhidrosis may be due to a disorder of the thyroid or pituitary gland, diabetes or other problems, thus medical advice is sometimes useful.

Some people afflicted with excess sweating experience a major reduction in their quality of life. Sufferers feel at a loss of control because perspiration takes place independent of temperature and emotional state. Worrying about the problem can lead to vicious cycle as anxiety causes further sweating.

Treatment

Hyperhidrosis can usually be very effectively controlled and efforts are being made to find a permanent cure. The difficulty is little is known about the cause behind excessive sweating.

Medications

Aluminium chloride solution: A 15% aluminium chloride solution or higher usually takes about a week of nightly use to stop the sweating, with one or two nightly applications per week to maintain the results. However, some people cannot tolerate the irritation that it can cause. Also, the solution is usually not effective for palmar (hand) and plantar (foot) hyperhidrosis.

Botulinum toxin type A (including Botox ): Injections of the botulinum toxin are used to disable the sweat glands. The effects can last from 4-9 months depending on the site of injections. With proper anesthesia the hand and foot injections are almost painless.

Oral medication

There are several oral drugs available to treat the condition with varying degrees of success.A class of anticholinergic drugs are available that have shown to reduce hyperhidrosis. Ditropan (generic name: oxybutynin) is one of these. For most people, however, the drowsiness, visual symptoms and dry-mouth (as well as all other mucus membranes) associated with the drug cannot be tolerated.

A different class of drugs known as beta-blockers has also been tried, but does not seem to be nearly as effective.

Surgical procedures

Surgery (Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy or ETS): Select sympathetic nerves or nerve ganglia in the chest are either excised (cut out) cut or burned, or clamped. Howeverm surgery is not without major drawbacks.

Surgery (Sweat gland suction): A new and novel technique adapted and modified from liposuction. Approximately 30% of the sweat glands are removed with a proportionate reduction in sweat.

Relaxation and meditation: Relaxation techniques have been tried with limited success.

Hypnosis: Hypnosis has been used with some success in improving the process of administering injections for the treatment of hyperhidrosis.

Talc/Baby Powder: One temporary treatment is talc or baby powder because the powder will absorb the sweat; however, after a while the powder may become a messy white coating on the place of application.
